Anil Deshmukh, who resigned as state home minister in April 2021, was arrested by the ED in November last year in connection with a money laundering case. He is currently in judicial custody. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) are also probing the allegations made against Deshmukh by former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh.
On dismissed police officer Sachin Waze, the Justice Chandiwal commission said that he was oscillating, never disclosed the truth and kept the government guessing. The panel has said the appointment of Sanjeev Palande as private secretary to Anil Deshmukh was blatantly wrong.
The state government had appointed Justice K U Chandiwal, a former judge of Bombay high court, to probe the charges of corruption against Deshmukh after Singh alleged in his eight-page letter to the CM of March 20, 2021, a day after he was shunted out from the CP’s post, that Deshmukh had set for Waze a target of collecting Rs 100 crore per month from 1,750 bars, restaurants and other establishments in Mumbai.
